N is a product of minimalist gaming design. The most detailed graphics in the game are for your character, which is a stick figure. You have three buttons - move left, move right, and jump. The gameplay is a mix of Lode Runner and Super Mario. Each level is one screen. Robots hunt you, and you cannot harm them. You steal gold, open the exit, and escape. The difficulty ramps up at an even pace across 450 levels. It will seem absurdly difficult every 8 levels or so, but then you'll discover the game is even deeper than you realized. It is good.

When I was doing research for my rope physics program (WHICH IS AS OF TODAY FINALLY COMPLETE), I came across an interview with one of the game's programmers. Some of the programming tricks he described were pretty clever.

edit: Does it make me a bad person to giggle like a little schoolgirl every time the ninja dies a horrible, bloody, physics-soaked soft-body death?

This game used to overheat my laptop before I dissected it and got the nasties out. Very good though, and quite entertaining. I find it fascinating that it employs ragdoll physics for the deaths but seems to ignore it for many other parts of the game. Granted, Ninjas can do just about anything, but that anything shouldn't include changing direction in mid-air. I guess Mario could do that though, and he's not a ninja.

::shrug::

Something else you chappies might want to check out is Tumiki Fighters. It's completely ridiculous, but much fun once you get into it. It's freeware, and it's basically a side-scrolling space shooter with a twist. That twist being, all the ships are made of tangram shapes. When you blast one out of the air and run into it as it's falling, it sticks to your ship and continues to fire shots (which now harm your enemies instead of you). So as long as you don't get hit, it's very fun to sail your way through hordes of enemy ships while carrying a massive scrapheap of death on your nose. Much fun, worth checking out.
