I have been following the Aeroscraft pretty closely, and it seems that there are new technologies being developed that will help make this a possibility. The main tech is called a COSH system, which mean Control of Static Heaviness. The basic concept mimics that of a submarine by pressurizing helium and taking on air to become heavier, then expelling air and releasing helium back into the lifting bags to become lighter.
This new system reduces the need for ground crews, airstrips, and cumbersome ballast systems. I'm excited because I'm from Alaska, which seems like it's going to become the proving ground for these new technologies.
