It has been ten thousand years since Mankind returned to the stars to reclaim that which was lost in the cataclysmic wars. Led by the Immortal God-Emperor ten millennia ago, Mankind rose again from the mire of barbarism and cast back the darkness in the legendary Great Crusade. A new age was forged, the Age of the Imperium.

The glittering achievements of the past have been all but lost, obscured by uncounted centuries of superstition and fear. The million worlds inhabited by Man are scattered across the galaxy, with vast gulfs of wilderness space separating one from another. An iron regime only maintained through flesh and blood, endless toil, monumental sacrifice, and unthinking loyalty to the golden throne on distant Terra. Man has learned to embrace war as its religion, and billions take up arms against a galaxy of foes.

Still it is not enough to guard the fragile worlds of man from a cruel and uncaring universe. The unnamed horrors which lurk upon forgotten worlds, the alien races which prey upon the scattered outposts of humanity, and the vile heretics who who gave their worship to the dark and terrible gods which dwell in the Realm of Chaos.

This is the age of the Imperium. A time of war and carnage among the stars, of great fleets and mighty armies, selfless heroism and blackest infamy.

If you dare enter these dark times, read on.

Battlefleet Gothic is a table top game from Games Workshop which features space battles between the races from Warhammer 40,000. Despite having cool game mechanics, it never really took off since I guess people couldn't sculpt breasts onto their game figurines for their non-cannon-all-female-space-marine-army or whatever. So it went to Specialist Games, the division of Games Workshop where all good games go to die. Thats good for us because Specialist Games hosts all of the rule books on their website for free, so we dont have to torrent a bunch of obscure pdfs from the pirate bay.

Knowledge is power. Do not waste it on the masses.
- Sector Governor Marius Hax

For this game we will have 2 teams, with 4 players on each team. Each player will control a single capitol ship, or a squadron of escorts. I will post an image of the game board, and each player on a team will post the orders for the ship they control. I will then process the results of your orders, post an updated image of the game board, and then the other team will go. Because its entirely forums based, timezones shouldn't matter much since I'll give a couple of days for each turn. This should be a lot simpler to pick up than our D&D or GURPS games, and shouldn't consume much time on the player's end.

You do not need to know all of the rules in order to play, just enough to tell me what you want your ship to do. However the better you know the rules, the more cool tricks you will be able to pull off in combat.

While you can download all of the rule books from the Specialist Games website, I have assembled the ones relevant to this game in a zip file which you can download HERE (52mbs).

In the zip file you will find:

BFG_Basic_Rules.pdf - Less than 30 pages (including fluff), this outlines the basic game structure and how ships move and fight. Read over most of this and you should be pretty much good to go.
BFG_Advanced_Rules.pdf - 17 pages, this outlines some of the more advanced rules which don't always apply to every game. If you are controlling a squadron of escorts, you should probably read over the page in here on squadrons. Some people might also find the ramming and boarding rules of interest.
BFG_Ships_of_the_Gothic_Sector.pdf - This is the basic ship list for the Imperial Navy, Chaos, Orks, and Eldar. Individual ship stats are found here.
BFG_Reference_Sheet.pdf - This is a quick reference sheet which might come in handy if printed out. Hell you could probably learn 90% of the game from just reading this.
Miniature_Combination_Russian_Phrase_Book_and_Bible - Well shoot a feller could have a pretty good weekend in vegas with all that stuff.

The Emperor is master of the galaxy, but the captain is master of his ship.
- Popular Imperial naval saying

As I already mentioned, there are 2 teams each with spots for 4 players. Claim whatever looks most interesting to you, first come first served. When you claim a ship make up a name for your captain and I'll roll for their leadership value. If you really want you can rename your ship too, though try to keep names in theme.

Imperial Navy Taskforce Sigma
You are expected at all times and in all situations to conduct yourself in a manner appropriate to, and mindful of, the great duties and traditions of the Emperor's Most Glorious and Honorable Navy.
-Imperial Navy Articles of War

Due to average speed and lackluster gun range, Imperial ships tend to perform poorly alone. Imperial ships often look unimpressive on paper, but perform well when working together. Nearly every modern Imperial capitol ship features a heavy armored prow, heavy broadside guns, and forward facing torpedo tubes which can be fired at range to disrupt the enemy advance, or held for devastating point blank salvos.

Imperial Mars Class Battlecruiser - Imperious [Unclaimed]
Captain: Fleet Admiral Nalcage (Leadership 8 )
The mars is a heavy support ship, featuring hanger bays for fighters & bombers, a long range lance battery, an armored prow, and a Nova Cannon for long range bombardment. It gets all of this at the sacrifice of broadside firepower, which is somewhat worse than the smaller Lunar class cruiser.

Imperial Lunar Class Cruiser - Retribution [Unclaimed]
The Lunar is the quintessential Imperial warship with a heavily armored prow, forward torpedo tubes, and strong broadsides filled with weapons batteries and lances. The Lunar is often underestimated, but almost never fails to pull its weight.

Imperial Dauntless Class Light Cruiser - Vigilant [Unclaimed]
The Dauntless provides mobility the Imperial fleet otherwise lacks. With is forward lances and broadside weapons batteries the Dauntless is able to hunt down and terrorize enemy escorts, and is able to assist against larger ships. (Whoever picks this ship has the option of swapping the 3 forward lances with 6 torpedo tubes)

Cobra Class Destroyer Squadron Erinyes (6 Ships) [Unclaimed]
Cobras are the fastest ship in the Imperial fleet, able to outpace even Light Cruisers and Frigates. A full squadron of 6 Cobras can launch a salvo of 12 Torpedoes, twice as many as any single Imperial Capitol ship. However the Cobra's weapons batteries lack the power to do much more than screen larger ships from enemy ordnance.

Chaos Warband "The Martyr Makers"
I murdered thousands for the Emperor and he gave me nothing except his damning silence. Now his lapdogs yap for every life I take, while the gods promise me the galaxy.
- Svane Vulfbad

Chaos cruisers are significantly faster than their Imperial counterparts, and often have up to double the weapon range. They will need to outmaneuver the Imperial ships to win, and have the capabilities to do so. Chaos Warmasters seek to win glory on their own, and their ships designs reflect that.

Hades Class Heavy Cruiser - Malignus Maximus [Unclaimed]
Captain: Warmaster Halface (Leadership 8 )
The Hades Class is an old Imperial design, from the days when the Imperium of Man still remembered how to build fast engines and long range weapons batteries and lances. While most of its strength lies in heavy weapons batteries along its broadsides, it features several forward facing lances capable of punching through heavy Imperial armor.

Murder Class Cruiser - Monstrous [Unclaimed]
The Murder class cruiser is very similar to its larger cousin, the Hades. While it has half the lance strength of the Hades, the other systems are nearly identical. A pair of Murders or Hades working in tandem form a devastating force.

Devastation Class Cruiser - Carrion Carrier [Unclaimed]
These cruisers are fleet support platforms, able to match a Mars Battlecruiser in fighter and bomber squadrons. This comes at the lack of guns, featuring only 2 long range lances on each broadside, and a short ranged weapons battery.

Infidel Raider Squadron Unforgivable (4 ships) [Unclaimed]
The Infidel was to be the successor to the Cobra destroyer, before the plans were lost to Chaos. It has the same number of torpedo launchers as the Cobra, but with superior weapons batteries.

I've read over the rules, and my guess is that we're better off with the Imperial Navy than the Chaos Warband. Maneuvering into close range and then firing with all salvos sounds easier than staying close enough to hit with your long range weapons while staying far enough away to avoid the short-range weapons of the Imperial ships.

Plus I generally favor firepower over speed.
